Have you ever struggled to express possibility in English clearly? Maybe you’re not sure when to use may, might, or could. No worries! In this blog, we’ll explain these three easy modal verbs with simple examples. By the end, you’ll confidently use them in your everyday English conversations.
Modal verbs are special helping verbs that add meaning to the main verb in a sentence. They express things like possibility, permission, ability, or necessity.
Today, we’re focusing on three modals:
All three express possibility, but they each have slightly different uses. Let’s see how!
The modal verb may is used when something is possible but we’re not completely sure. It’s often used when talking about future possibilities or giving formal permission.
Tip: “May” is more formal and polite than “might” and “could” when talking about possibilities or formal permissions. It’s often used in academic or professional situations.
The modal verb might is very similar to “may,” but it usually suggests that something is less certain.
Tip: You can usually swap “may” and “might” without changing the meaning too much. However, “might” often sounds a little less certain.
Compare these two sentences:
Could’ expresses general possibility, suggestions, or polite requests and informal permission.
Examples:
Tip: ‘Could’ often implies possibility based on certain conditions or situations.
Tip: “Could” is often used to suggest a possibility rather than just state it.
Now that you understand the basic meanings let’s compare them!
Remember: “May” and “might” are often interchangeable, but “could” is used more for possibilities that depend on circumstances.
We can also use these modal verbs to talk about past possibilities. In this case, we use:
Examples:
Tip: “Might have” and “may have” mean the same thing in the past!
