Hi Diana! Please tell us a bit about your background and your move to Dubai.
I began my career in Colombia as a dentist many years ago, where my language of work and study was Spanish. I moved to Dubai 10 years ago but ended up postponing my decision to work so I could stay home with my young children.
Why did you decide to take an English course in Dubai?
I understand that English is an important skill here and everywhere. After I started working here, my goal was to eventually apply for a job with Dubai Healthcare City, where they required a specific IELTS score. I realized that I had to be really well prepared in order to achieve my best possible result.
How did you hear about ES Dubai?
A patient of mine – a fellow Colombian – had told me about ES Dubai’s English language classes, so when it was time for me to look for a suitable English course, I remembered her recommendation. I was specifically looking for an IELTS course.
How was your experience at ES Dubai?
It was really good. The location of the school was great for me. Their facilities are amazing but the most important thing for me was the staff. The staff was very helpful, with native English-speaking teachers. ES Dubai chooses their teachers very well for each course; the teachers know exactly what students need at different levels. The teacher for my IELTS course, Rita, was amazing! I got not only preparation for my IELTS, but I also got confidence in my English skills. I learnt more vocabulary and really good tools to improve my English in my practical day to day life.
How did your career progress after your English course?
I successfully achieved the goal I had set for myself at the beginning of my English classes and obtained a good score in my IELTS exam. I’m now working in a private dental clinic under my Dubai Health Authority license, and I’m happy to get a better career opportunity.
What is the process to start working as a dentist in Dubai?
In my specific field, medical science, the job application process here is long and detailed. There are many different entities that we can apply to – Ministry of Health and Prevention, Dubai Health Authority, Dubai Healthcare City, Health Authority of Abu Dhabi, for example. They are all completely different and the requirements depend on the profession, time of practice and the country where the professional title is obtained. I can’t give you a step-by-step scheme because each entity and case can change. Even the process that I did has already changed and is not the same today. My advice is to carefully research the official website of the health authorities in advance to find out exactly what to do.
Do you have any advice for international students who are interested in learning English in Dubai and eventually working here?
If you have the opportunity to come to the Middle East, it would be an amazing chance to interact with many cultures. Dubai is a multicultural environment and the learning process is more interactive here, as you have the chance to listen to different accents. And of course, you have to try your best!
